A talk with Indian Maker Manan
As the afternoon sun streams into TroubleMaker, a Maker Space in Futian, Manan is busy testing the circuit board of an automated electronic product.
This Indian engineer doesn’t speak Chinese, yet in Futian he has found the perfect rhythm for entrepreneurship—no tedious paperwork, no language problems. From concept to prototype, it takes him just one week.
“Honestly, I just wanted a place where I could actually make things,” Manan says with a smile. This is his third time in China, but in Futian, he feels more “in the zone” than anywhere else.
That kind of feeling started with a well-targeted search for a maker space.
As someone who moved from academic research to engineering, Manan has always harbored a passion for “building things with his hands.” That’s why he took on an automated electronics project and began scouting the globe for the best place to bring it to life.
For Manan, what he needed wasn’t just a desk—it was a workshop where ideas could be quickly shaped into physical objects. So he zeroed in on TroubleMaker, located inside BLACKARK in Futian, and immediately hit it off with its manager, Hank. “He told me there are plenty of opportunities here, and that this would be the springboard I need.”

And that’s exactly how it turned out. In this space filled with dreamers from around the world, language is no longer a barrier. “We all speak the same language—talking about technologies, problems, and solutions.” Manan found that this kind of open talk helped him quickly grasp how things work locally. More importantly, the space provided a buffer for him to understand the Chinese market. “As an Indian who doesn’t speak Chinese, I need a bridge to share knowledge and ideas. This international maker space has been that bridge for me.”
This international vibe is only part of Futian’s appeal. What truly amazed Manan is Futian’s strong manufacturing ecosystem.
Manan is full of praise: “If I need anything customized, whether through local suppliers or Taobao, it usually arrives at my doorstep within three days.”
This “plug-and-play” supply chain speed gives a freelance hardware innovator like him to try and improve fast. “Here—especially in hardware—you can build whatever you want, and you can do it quickly. In about a week, you’re done.”

Although Manan hasn’t registered a company yet and continues to work as a freelancer, he already feels the drive that comes from being rooted in Futian. He admits that if his project goes well, he will seriously think about putting down roots in the district.
At the end of the interview, Manan turns back to his circuit board. In a district like Futian, brimming with opportunities, he is proving in his own way that when a person with an idea meets a place that can turn that idea into reality fast, creation just happens naturally.
